1. Rocket Singh: Salesman of the year (2009)
This is the story of a not so studious protagonist Harpreet Singh Bedi, played by Ranbir Kapoor, who is mocked by his colleagues and his boss for his less than average academic performance. Harpreet was also a very honest man and did not support the company’s ways of resorting to bribery and other dishonest acts for acquiring clients. This also added to the contempt towards him by his colleagues. He believed that customer satisfaction was the key to success and unlike the company he works for which uses bribery for selling products, he starts his own company by prioritizing customers over everything without his boss’s knowledge and with the right kind of people, the risks pay off thus making him very successful. The film features D Santhosh and Naveen Kaushik along with Ranbir Kapoor in the lead roles with Prem Chopra and Shazahn Padamsee in supporting roles. The movie was also the latter’s debut movie in Bollywood. It was directed by Shimit Amin and produced by Aditya Chopra under Yash Raj Film banner. The movie teaches us the importance of having a humble character and also that hard work matter more than talent and academic excellence. The movie was declared successful un the box-office and got positive reviews from the critics.
2. Band Baaja Bharat (2010)
This movie is about two young people Shruthi and Bittoo starting off a wedding planning business ‘Shaadi Mubarak’ after graduating college and their struggles in the business until they become successful. Their wedding planner company became a huge success and they had many clients who had good reputations. But their professional relationship is ruined when Shruthi falls in love with Bittoo. Bittoo doesn’t love her and Shruthi was hurt and heartbroken. This causes them to fall apart from each other’s lives and businesses. They begin to run the business individually. But they are forced to work together again for a really important and particular client who was a big deal but would only hire them to plan his daughter’s marriage if they did that together and not as different businesses. So, they work together again and Bittoo finally realizes he loves Shruthi too and the film is ended on a happy note with them being so in love and their company a huge hit. Anushka Sharma and Ranveer Singh are seen starring in the movie and although it is a love story, it also speaks about the struggles and all the hard work and sweat behind beginning a start-up. The movie was directed by Maneesh Sharma who was a fresher at the time and was produced by Yash Raj Film and Ranveer Singh was a newcomer too at the time.
3. Guru (2007)
This movie is a story of a couple Gurukant Desai and his wife Sujata, who is from a village, who rises to success with hard work and become India’s top business magnets. Guru marries Sujata mainly for the dowry offered. The young man is from a small village and he is a dreamer, but his father tells him not to dream so big. But he proves his father wrong and moves to Bombay with his wife and becomes a business tycoon. At Mumbai, he begins his own cloth manufacturing units and starts to train cloths. He becomes acquainted with Manik Dasgupta who treats him like a son and he also respects Manik like his father. Driven by his success, he ruthless tries to expand his business and illegally buys parts for his manufacturing units and manipulate profits and stocks to suit him and thus becomes ruthless and hungry for money. Manik who finds out about his illegal ways, exposes him and he is charged for his corrupt ways and the tension causes him to have a stroke. He is called for a private hearing to defend his case and after the hearing, he delivers a speech to the public that forces the authorities to free him of all the charges on him except for 2 which were proved and for which he was fined. Directed by Mani Ratnam, this movie features Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, R Madhavan and Vidya Balan in the lead roles. It is one of the best Entrepreneur themed Bollywood movies. The movie was dubbed and released simultaneously in Tamil and Telugu. It was also premiered at the Cannes Film Festival of 2007.
4. Corporate (2006)
Starring Bipasha Basu, Kay Kay Menon, Payal Rohatgi, Minissha Lamba and Raj Babbar, this is a movie that shows the ugly face of a business. Bipasha Basu can be seen in the role of Nishigandha Dasgupta, the vice president of Sehgal Group of Industries (SGI). Marwah Group of Industries (MGI) and SGI were rivals in business. Nishi charms the CEO of MGI and steals information from him which she uses for her company’s advantage and the CEO of MGI gets fired. Later, SGI’s products were detected by the FDA to have a large amount of pesticide but they bribe FDA agents and release the product. Marwah comes to know of this and exposes them but SGI puts the blame of the blunder on Nishigandha to save their reputation. Meanwhile, she gets pregnant with the child of Sehgal’s brother-in-law Ritesh. Ritesh tries to save her but is found dead the next day by falling from a terrace. At the end of the movie, Nishi can be seen still fighting the battle for justice after two years, with her child. It is a story of a woman caught between two business tycoons and the games they played against each other with her as the pawn which ruined her personal life and career. The movie was directed by Madhur Bhandarkar. It got positive reviews and was a noted movie of the year.
5. Manzil (1979)
Amitabh Bachchan and Moushumi Chatterjee star in this movie. It is a story of a poor man pretending to be rich to woo a rich girl whom he loves and she eventually falls for him too. He keeps his charade going on by renting a flat and a car with the help of a friend to make him look rich. He tries to start a business but fails big time as he was cheated by his partner who took bribes from other big companies that were trying to bribe them out. He faces many hardships and gets charged with swindling. He is imprisoned and is bailed out by his mother. It still doesn’t work. His lover’s father who is a lawyer finally finds out the truth about him and sues him for his failed business. So, his mother sells her jewellery and tells her son to do everything himself without the others’ help. He was also helped by a friend who sends him money disguised as order. This helps him stand back upon his feet and everything is finally settled. The movie was directed by Basu Chatterjee. It was declared average in the box office but Amitabh Bachchan was praised for his acting.
